Personalities.
Many famous people were born in Liguria, and even
more have honoured the two Rivieras with their presence,
especially since the nineteenth century. For this
reason, you will find here not only the names of
the navigator Christopher Columbus, the musician
Nicolò Paganini, the astronomer Domenico
Cassini, the poet Eugenio Montale and other less
well-known but very important figures in the history
of the region (such as the cartographer Matteo Vinzoni
or the writer Vittorio G. Rossi), but you will also
see the names of other figures who have worked or
spent their holidays in Liguria: for example Maupassant,
Stendhal, Goethe, Wagner, Valéry, Nietzsche,
Andersen and Sibelius. Many of them spoke about
Liguria knowingly and with enthusiasm and so their
names are recorded with affection by the local communities
that they visited on commemorative stones, in small
museums and elsewhere.
