Golfo Paradiso.
The small hamlets that overlook the Golfo Paradiso
(Paradise Gulf), with a sea front known worldwide
for its extraordinary beauty, are intense and manifold
splashes of color clinging to the cliffs. The fishermen's
houses, with their narrow, tall, and highly colorful
facades, make this stretch of coast unique, alternating
with small beaches and rocks covered with Mediterranean
vegetation.
In the communities along the shoreline, the great
seafaring tradition is preserved, concentrating
especially in Camogli: its characteristic small
harbors display numerous gozzi (typical Ligurian
fishing boats), with nets stretched out in the sun;
the Seafaring Museum is in the center. Here, logbooks,
captain's journals, drawings of sailing ships, sextants,
and compasses tell of a golden age of navigation
in which the city was king. There are also excellent
flavors from the sea that can be sampled at the
restaurant tables and in lanes of the village, fried
in enormous pans during the great fish festival
in the month of May.
