Fontanabuona.
Val Fontanabuona is the valley of the Lavagna river
which largely runs along the coast beyond the ranges
overlooking the Tigullio Gulf. The area also includes
the valleys of some of the minor affluents.
These are territories which are historically tied
to the noble presence of the Fieschi Family, starting
from the town of Lavagna at the mouth of the river
by the same name, which each year in August relives
its past with the historical celebration of the
Torta dei Fieschi; the centers which one meets after
climbing up the valley are part of the so called
Fliscani Feuds, which also include other small villages
with castles or towers in other close-by areas of
the Genoa province.
Passageway between Liguria, Emilia and Tuscany,
together with the Trebbia Valley, it reveals an
incredible landscape variety from the river habitat
to the cultivated hilly vineyards and olive groves
to the higher ranges which greatly exceed 1000 meters
in height. Fontanabuona is especially renown as
the slate territory, the precious black stone which
has been mined since antiquity and used both as
construction material (characteristic trait of the
roofs of the entire Ligurian coastline) and for
various craft made productions.
There is a six-stage eco-museum featuring slate
which ends in the Mount San Giacomo caves behind
Lavagna, two steps from the monumental complex of
San Salvatore di Cogorno, symbol of the Fieschi
power.
