Bormide.
Truffles grow in the valleys along the forks of
the Bormida river. Millesimo, capital of the precious
tubers dedicates a national festival to them each
year.
Within the Langhe di Piana Crixia protected area
you can admire a marvelous stone mushroom: the rock
weighs 2,600 quintals (57,300 lbs), it is 14 meters
(46 ft) high, and the perfectly balanced shape above
its slender base is stunning. It is one of the gullies-sedimentary
rock formations sculpted by wind and water.
A short distance away, fascinating karstic shapes
characterize the surface and depths of the Bric
Tana regional park, where limestone spires tower
over the dense forests creating a striking natural
scene. Discoveries found here, at Tana dell'Orpe,
bear witness to the presence of humankind since
prehistory. More recently, there was Napoleon's
passage at Cairo Montenotte, where in 1796 he defeated
the Austrians. Various examples of military architecture
survive from the period, and can be visited on outing
into the greenery among the caves, dolines, and
ancient menhirs.
